Match Preview | St. Louis CITY Set for Western Conference Showdown with LA Galaxy at CITYPARK

St. Louis CITY SC are back in action at CITYPARK facing LA Galaxy this Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT. The match can be viewed on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app and FOX and heard by our radio partners on KYKY Y98.1 FM (English) and KXOK 102.9 FM (Spanish).

CITY SC currently sits at the summit of the MLS Western Conference standings with a record of 9-5-1. St. Louis comes into the match with a three-match home win streak after recording victories over Sporting KC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Houston Dynamo – scoring at least three goals in each game.

CITY SC currently sits on nine wins and can make expansion club history on Sunday with another victory. Excluding the shootout era, LAFC (2018) holds the record for the fastest expansion club to 10 regular season wins, accomplishing the feat in 18 matches. If CITY SC secures their tenth win Sunday, they will have done so in 16 matches.

CITY SC has scored three or more goals in eight of their 15 MLS games this season (9 of 17 across all competitions). St. Louis have also scored at least 3 goals in each of their home wins this season in MLS (3-1 vs Charlotte, 3-0 vs San Jose, 5-1 vs FC Cincinnati, 4-0 vs Sporting KC, 3-1 vs Vancouver Whitecaps, 3-0 Houston Dynamo).

CITY SC has three players (Eduard Löwen, João Klauss and Niko Gioacchini) with five goals in the MLS and has seen 13 different players chip in with goals across all competitions. CITY SC has eight different players (Klauss, Gioacchini, Jared Stroud, Löwen, Indiana Vassilev, Kyle Hiebert, Rasmus Alm, Tomáš Ostrák) with multiple goals this MLS season, more than any other team in the league.

Löwen opened the scoring with a set-piece goal in each of CITY SC’s last three home games – a penalty against Sporting KC, a free-kick against Vancouver and a penalty against Houston. The midfielder leads the team in assists (6), tackles (28), successful dribbles (35), passes (505) and crosses (19).

CITY SC midfielder Njabulo Blom has started the last three matches at home at CITYPARK. Amongst midfielders who have played over 500 minutes this season, Blom is first in the league for interceptions (2.77) per 90 minutes, duel success percent (63.9%) per 90 minutes and is sixth in the league for recoveries (8.32) per 90 minutes.

CITY SC winger Rasmus Alm featured in his first game back from injury against Houston Dynamo in CITY SC’s 3-0 win. CITY SC are 7-1-1 when Alm is on the field, outscoring their opponents by 25-7 in those games. When Alm is absent, CITY SC are 2-4-0 and have been outscored by their opponents 9-2. Alm has recorded a goal contribution in four of his last five games, putting together a four-game streak of providing a goal or an assist from March 25 – April 29.  

LA Galaxy comes into the match with a record of 3-9-3 but have struggled on the road, earning one win in eight games (1-5-2 record). The Galaxy ended their seven-match winless run in MLS road games with a 3-2 win at Real Salt Lake on May 31. The Galaxy earned more points (3) and scored more goals (3) in that match than they had in their first seven road games of the season combined (2 points, 1 goal), per Opta.

LA Galaxy has won 12 of its 19 matches against expansion teams since the start of the 2010 season (12-3-4), including a 1-0 win at Charlotte last season. The Galaxy's only loss in their last eight matches against MLS newcomers was a 20 defeat at Austin in September 2021 (5-1-2).
